McDowell, 9, Cara McDowell, 7, and Nichola McDowell, 6,
set up www.sistersmcdowell.com, a web site that collects
old cell phones
OCALA,
FL (PRWEB) January 13, 2005 -- While millions of Americans
have been deeply touched by the suffering caused by the
recent tsunami, three young sisters from the Kansas City,
Mo. area decided to take action – and they have found
a way to raise a significant amount of money for tsunami
victims.
Cas,
Cara and Nichola McDowell – aged 9, 7 and 6 respectively
– have founded a web site devoted to collecting and
selling old cell phones. Their site, www.sistersmcdowell.com,
partners with a Florida-based web site, www.wirelessfundraiser.com.
Money raised through the sale of the old cell phones will
be donated to such charities as Save the Children, American
Red Cross and Heart To Heart for the benefit of the tsunami
victims.
Claire
Salvo-McDowell, the girls’ mom, said the three sisters
have visited other countries and have met people who are
less privileged than they are. She said when they saw news
accounts of the tsunami, they wanted to do something to
help.
“The
girls saw the news coverage, and they tried to decide what
they could do to help,” Claire said. “The local
Sunday paper had a story about recycling cell phones, so
they did some research on-line and found www.wirelessfundraiser.com.”
www.WirelessFundraiser.com
is one of several websites operated by RMS Communications
Group Inc. of Ocala, Fla., one of the nation’s leading
recyclers and re-marketers of old cell phones. The company
pays cash for old cell phones, then carefully goes through
then before selling them around the world. WWW.WirelessFundraiser.com
is a web site that provides non-profits with a way to raise
money by gathering and selling old cell phones.
Besides
setting up the www.sistersmcdowell.com
web site, the girls have been seeking partnerships with
businesses in their community. One of them, the local Sam’s
Club, has agreed to host a one-day cell phone collection
event, and the girls are hopeful that other local businesses
will follow suit.
“The
girls have sent out a letter to local businesses to take
drop boxes and sponsor t-shirts for volunteers,” Claire
said.
James
Mosieur, chief executive officer of RMS Communications Group,
said the actions of the McDowell sisters demonstrate how
the www.WirelessFundraiser.com
web site can be used to raise money for a whole range of
worthy causes.
“When
we set up the www.WirelessFundraiser.com
web site, we believed we could partner with all kinds of
worthwhile organizations around the country that needed
to find creative ways to raise money for good causes,”
Mosieur said. “This is certainly a good example of
what we had in mind, and we are very proud to be partnering
with these three very caring young ladies.”
Typically,
www.WirelessFundraiser.com
pays between $3 and $173 for each useable phone, and carefully
recycles and disposes of phones that are unusable. Usable
phones are remarketed and resold, and many phones are donated
to domestic violence shelters, senior centers or other worthwhile
organizations.
