Iceland
of New Hyde Park, a year-round ice skating facility on Long
Island, has joined with Special
Olympics and RMS
( a leading wireless international wholesaler) to help
consumers recycle their used cell phones in an environmentally
safe manner, while raising awareness about local athletes
with intellectual disabilities.
More
than an estimated seven million people throughout the United
States have intellectual disabilities. Through its Recycle
for Special
Olympics campaign, the nonprofit organization hopes
to raise more than a million dollars to help give these
children and adults the opportunity to reach their athletic
potential and to reap the considerable benefits delivered
through sports training and competition. When a person recycles
one cell phone, Special
Olympics receives anywhere from $1 to $100 depending
on the cell phone model.
Iceland,
a designated community collection site, has answered the
challenge with an added incentive for all its generous patrons.
From now until the end of January, for every unwanted cell
phone discarded at Iceland's Recycle for Special
Olympics donations bin, the skating rink will take $2
off the price of admission to any public skating session.
Iceland is centrally located a short distance for the Nassau/Queens
border at 3345 Hillside Avenue in New Hyde Park. Summer
sessions are on Friday nights from 8:15 to 10:15 p.m.; Saturday
afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.; on Sunday there are two
sessions, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (Phone
746-1100 for further information on fall/winter sessions).
Regular admission prices are $6 for age 7 through adult
and $4 for children ages 6 and under. Skate rental is available
for an additional $3.
