| The
Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the State of
California have both released a study that classifies old
cell phones as hazardous waste, but consumers and companies
can turn in old phones for cash and solve the problem.
Ocala,
FL May 10, 2004 -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and the State of California have confirmed what many
environmental groups have warned –unwanted cell phones
are a threat to our environment.
The
toxicity is primarily due to the use of lead (a toxic metal)
in the phones. Once they are tossed into a landfill that
lead will leach the toxic lead into the environment. One
way to prevent that is to turn in old cell phones to be
refurbished and reused.
"Americans
have heard the call to 'cycle your cell,' and they are turning
in their old phones in bigger numbers every day," said
James Mosieur of CellForCash.com,
owned by RMS Communications Group, Inc. from Ocala, Fla.
CellForCash.com
enables individuals, companies, or non-profit groups to
turn in old cell phones so they can be refurbished and reused
– keeping them out of landfills where they can cause
harm to the environment.
"Mobile
phones will be discarded at a rate of more than 130 million
per year by the year 2005, and that translates to 65,000
tons of hazardous waste. The phones and their batteries
contain various hazards, like cadmium, chromium, beryllium,
lead, mercury, nickle, zinc, and brominated flame retardants,"
said Mosieur.
The
EPA has urged individuals and companies to take a renewed
responsibility for their impact on the environment, and
CellForCash.com
is making it easier than ever for everyone to share in the
challenge.
"Most
people do not have a clue what to do with their old wireless
phone when they upgrade to a newer model. We make it easy
to give your old cell a new home – 'cycle your cell.'
We will even give you a prepaid shipping label so you can
send it in at no cost to you, and you can designate a charity
and we will give them a cash donation in your name,"
said Mosieur.
"We
are challenging all Americans to take a 'hands-on' approach
to helping conserve our precious natural resources,"
said Marianne Lamont Horinko, EPA Assistant Administrator
for Solid Waste and Emergency Response in an official EPA
release. "EPA is asking Americans to adopt smart environmental
practices, make smart environmental purchases, reuse more
products, and recycle at least one pound of their household
waste a day."
The
results will be less waste, more economic growth and greater
energy savings and recovery, she said.
"When
you 'cycle your cell' at CellForCash.com,
we all benefit through resource conservation, solid waste
reduction, environmental protection, energy conservation
and social and economic development," said Mosieur.
Individuals
or groups can earn extra cash by helping others to turn
in their phones. Information about the program can be found

"We
offer both individuals and non-profit groups the opportunity
to send us old cell phones in working condition, and we
pay them from $3 to $92 per phone. We even pay the cost
of shipping the old phones to us," said Mosieur.
